AUBURN – The annual banquet and election of officers will be followed by installation for the American Legion Eight and Forty on Saturday, July 17, at the Ground Round, Center Street.
A memorial service will be held for deceased members and a moment of silence will be held for the men and women serving in Iraq. No reservations are needed for the lunch.

Seniors barbecue
AUBURN – First Auburn Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Hasty Community Center, Pettengill Park. Members should take their cups and table utensils for the chicken barbecue to be served following the meeting.
Tickets will be available for the Aug. 18 barbecue to be held at the Hasty Center rather than the Auburn Tot Lot. Bingo will be played after the meal.
At the July 7 meeting, Doris Sansbury and Nancy Bosse were welcomed as new members. Attendance winners were Audrey Fleming and Crystal Briggs; and pot of gold, Pat Donohue, Roger Briggs and Martin Lashua.
Annual reports were presented and Joyce Poole, trip coordinator, reminded all that payment for the Boothbay Harbor Carousel Dinner Theater will be due on July 21. Seats are still available for the Aug. 2 Fairpoint outing. After a bag lunch, bingo was played.
Leavitt alumni
TURNER – The annual Leavitt Institute and Leavitt Area High School Alumni Reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Turner Elementary School.
Registration will be held at 10:30 a.m. There will be a time to mingle, a short meeting and a luncheon. All are welcome.

Seats available
LEWISTON – The Lewiston Senior Citizens’ trip to the Ogunquit Playhouse on Thursday, July 29, to see the production of “Cats” has had so many sign-ups that they have ordered a larger bus to accommodate everyone.
Because of that, there are six seats available. The bus will leave the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center at 9:30 a.m., travel to Ogunquit for lunch (cost not included) with arrival at the Ogunquit Playhouse by 1:45 p.m. The play will start at 2:30. The bus will return to the center by 6:30. Cost for members is $53; nonmembers, $58.
Vacation school
LEWISTON – The Thomas Memorial Baptist Church announces its Vacation Bible School kickoff party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at the Central Maine Christian Academy, 390 Main St.
The Vinton Baptist Youth Choir will perform, and it will include a moon walk, face painting, balloons, cotton candy and popcorn. The torch-lighting ceremony will be at 7:30 p.m.
Vacation Bible School at the church, 62 Strawberry Ave., will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 26 to 30, and will include 100 percent Bible ingredients, Gold Medal Music, SonGames 2004, Global Games and heart-healthy fun. For more information, call 784-0034.
New art show set
POLAND – The Poland Spring Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 24, on the hilltop grounds of the Poland Spring Resort, Route 26. Rain date is Sunday, July 25.
Sponsored by the Poland Spring Preservation Society, the inaugural event will feature the works of more than 80 artists from Maine and adjoining states. Artwork will be for sale, lunch and snacks will be available on the grounds, and strolling musicians will provide entertainment.

Birthday party
GREENE – An 80th birthday party was held to honor Jeannette Parise of Auburn at Sedgeley’s. A meal and social time were held.
Attending were Parise’s two daughters and son-in-laws, Joan and Ray Guerin of Abbot, and Linda and Carl Harrington of Livermore, and her son, Michael of Abbot.
Also present were her grandchildren, Chris and Tanya Guerin of Monmouth, Amanda and Mike Labonte of Lewiston, Devin Harrington of Livermore, and Cindy and Craig VerColen of Massachusetts.
Great-grandchildren attending were Ashlee Labonte of Lewiston, Morgan and MacKenzie Guerin of Monmouth, and Jake and Alex VerColen of Massachusetts.
A raspberry cake was served, and Parise received flowers, gifts and cards from relatives.
