PARIS – A 20-year-old Farmingdale man will spend four months in jail for giving a false name twice to police after getting into a fight.

Michael P. Benjamin pleaded guilty to separate charges of assault and forgery Wednesday in Oxford County Superior Court. His sentence was stayed until Friday.

Benjamin told Oxford Police Sgt. Rickie Jack his name was Jeremy Blanchard after he assaulted Christopher Bernard on Oct. 6, 2003, in Oxford.

Then, when Lt. Jonathan Tibbetts confronted him with the lie two weeks later in Norway, Benjamin told him his name was really Michael Belanger. Benjamin signed a summons with that name, even after Tibbetts warned him against giving false statements to police.

Tibbetts was able to verify Benjamin’s identity from a photo on file at the Kennebec County Jail.

Benjamin was initially charged with aggravated forgery, but the charge was reduced to forgery in a plea bargain arrangement.
