MONTVILLE – The Maine Fiddle Camp will take place from Aug. 8 to 13 at Camp Neofa on True’s Pond and there is still space available.

The Maine Traditional Music Association, a nonprofit that sponsors the camp, is devoted to preserving the heritage of old-time music and country dancing that goes back in history to the first colonists that brought their tunes and dances form Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Norway and Sweden.

A staff of traditional musicians teach old and young, beginners and advanced musicians how to fiddle and accompany the tunes in the style that has developed in New England and the Maritime provinces.

The program is not only for fiddlers and violinists, but there are workshops offered for piano, guitar and cello accompaniment, and Irish penny whistle as well. There are also concerts, lectures, dances, swimming, bonfires, canoeing and meals featuring locally produced organic food.

Families, couples, and single people are welcome. Campers receive a learning CD of traditional tunes before attending camp.

Camp Director Doug Protsik of Woolwich and his colleagues, such as Don Roy, Greg Boardman and Ellen Gawler, and the Old Grey Goose band, have been performing and teaching the old-time Maine music on piano, fiddle, guitar and accordion for more than 30 years. They have been sharing their knowledge at Maine Fiddle Camp for the last 10 years. Dance caller Dudley Laufman, country fiddler Tim Farrell, Guy Bouchard from Quebec, other musicians and campers join to present camp concerts, some of which are open to the public.

The cost is $300/person and $250 for each additional family member, which includes all tuition, housing and meals. For more information call 207-443-5411 or visit the web at http://home.gwi.net/fiddle.
