LEWISTON – A surprise party was held on March 20 for Roland and Guilda Desjardins of Lewiston, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. A “diversion party” was held on Feb. 28 and consisted of a home cooked dinner with family members.

Party hosts for the event, which was held at the home of Paul and Louise Cote, were Paul and Louise Cote, Roger Desjardins and Denise Desjardins, children of the couple, Paul O’Clair, friend of the family, and Jeannette Labonte, the couple’s godchild.

A three-tier anniversary cake decorated with gold and white roses and wedding bells was the centerpiece for the gift table.

Among the numerous gifts received was a lifetime remembrance scrapbook created by Marilyn Wilkinson and Dorothy Boyer, former childhood neighbors and friends of Mrs. Desjardins. The scrapbook consisted of a collection of photographs, including the couple’s wedding day, family camping trips throughout the United States and Canada and various family celebrations, including holidays, anniversaries and college graduations.

Their son, Roger, of North Andover, Mass., gave the toast. All 47 family members and friends who attended signed the guest book.

Mr. Desjardins and the former Guilda Louise Thibault were married on Feb. 22, 1954, at St. Louis Catholic Church in New Auburn.

Mrs. Desjardins, a loving wife and mother, is a housewife and was co-owner of the former Lorraine and Guilda’s Restaurant on South Main Street in New Auburn. She is a former member of the Holy Family Church Choir and the Magic Pops Choral Group.

Mr. Desjardins, a loving husband and father, is a World War II veteran who served in Germany. Shortly after the war, he worked as a technical representative in Europe for the Philco Corporation. A graduate of the RCA Institute, he is the former vice president and director of engineering at Maine Public Broadcasting. He is a long time amateur radio operator with the call sign of W1PSK.

Original wedding attendant present was Lorraine Thibault, sister of Mrs. Desjardins, who was the maid of honor.
