NEW YORK (AP) – Mets first baseman Mike Piazza sprained his left wrist when a baserunner collided with him as he reached for a throw in the second inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Florida Marlins.

Third baseman Ty Wigginton threw wide on a bunt by Juan Pierre, and the runner and ball arrived at first base at the same moment. Pierre hit Piazza’s left hand as the first baseman reached for the throw. As the ball bounced away, Piazza dropped his glove in obvious pain and clutched his left wrist. Pierre advanced to second on Wigginton’s error.

Eric Valent replaced Piazza at first base.

X-rays on Piazza’s wrist were negative. He will be re-evaluated Wednesday.

This season, the Mets moved Piazza, an All-Star catcher his entire major league career, to first base to limit the wear and tear of catching. He’s made a team-leading 43 starts at first this year.
