RUMFORD – Five vehicles were damaged in two separate accidents within a minute of each other at the sharp curve along Route 2 at Rumford Point Wednesday afternoon.

Although thousands of dollars in damage resulted, no one was injured.

Road paving work from just east of Rumford Center to Hanover created a long line of backed-up traffic in the westbound and eastbound lanes.

About 4:07 p.m., a westbound 2004 Chevy pickup driven by Edmund Gaisson III, 27, of Lakeland, Fla., hit with the rear of a 2001 Saab driven by Daniel Lepage, 41, of Pembroke, N.H., said Rumford police Officer Doug Maifeld. Lepage’s car had hit the rear of a 1989 Plymouth Acclaim driven by Elaine Maurais, 64, of Peru.

The second accident happened a minute later when a 2002 Ford pickup driven by Michael Knox, 49, of Fairfield, was hit in the rear when he stopped for the accident ahead of him. Traveling him was his wife, Debbie Knox, 49.

Laura Nokes, 39, of South Paris, who was traveling alone, apparently didn’t see that Knox had stopped, said Rumford police Officer James Bernard. Her 2000 Saab struck the truck, causing about $1,000 damage to the rear, and destroying her vehicle.

Gaisson had three passengers with him, and Maurais had two passengers. Everyone in all five vehicles was wearing safety belts.

“The second wreck was the result of the first three-car wreck, but they were all going between 15 and 20 mph,” said Maifeld.

He said Lepage’s Saab may have been totally destroyed, but estimated damages at $4,000. Gaisson’s truck sustained $3,000 in damages. Maurais’s Plymouth was not damaged.

Med-Care Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulances to the scene, and the Rumford Fire Department also responded. All emergency vehicles were turned back when Bernard and Maifeld determined there were no injuries.
