LEWISTON – The Dominican Sisters of the Roman Congregation will celebrate their centennial at the 10 a.m. liturgy at Saints Peter and Paul Church on Sunday, July 25.

All are invited to join in this celebration of thanksgiving with Bishop Richard Malone, area and visiting clergy, religious men and women from other congregations, and family and friends.

Dominican Sisters from Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Spain, Sweden and the United States will be in attendance. The congregation will pray in thanksgiving with Sister Renee Turcotte who is celebrating 50 years as a Dominican Sister.

The Sisters, who belong to an international community, arrived in Maine in 1904 from France. Since their arrival, they have served mostly in the Lewiston and Sabattus areas and have staffed and served St. Peter’s School and Parish, St. Dominic Regional High School, the Ave Maria Academy and Our Lady of the Rosary School and Parish. Some have also ministered in local hospitals and nursing homes.

Through the years, they have branched out throughout the United States, answering ministry requests whenever possible. The Dominicans continue their Maine presence in local parishes, hospitals, nursing homes and in caring for the poor and hungry in rural areas. They are also serving in the states of New York, Illinois, Iowa, Oregon and Arizona.
