Open Farm Day will take place Sunday, July 25, at more than 80 farms across Maine. People are invited to visit and see what farm life is all about. Visitors can watch farm activities and demonstrations from milking to felting; pet farm animals, pick berries, tour a barn or go on a hay ride. There will be farm-raised products for sale, displays to see and samples to taste.

Franklin County

Shady Lane Farm, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Dairy farm, 108 Brahmer Road, New Vineyard

• Dairy milking facility with 45 cows, 80 head of young stock. Also raise horn Dorset sheep and Yorkshire hogs and produce maple syrup. Tour dairy barn and hog barn; see poultry and petting zoo. Wagon rides with Belgian horses and demonstrations of boiling maple syrup.

From Route 27 in New Vineyard take Route 234 toward N. Anson. Go about 2.5 miles, take first right (dirt road). The farm is in about mile. From N. Anson take Route 234 toward New Vineyard about 8 or 9 miles (it will be the fifth left hand turn). Watch for the signs.

Tullibardine Farm LLP, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Livestock, forage, farm store and kennels, Starks Road, New Sharon

• Family farm with 22 acres of improved pasture and hayfields, 1 acre of mixed vegetables, and a 40-acre woodlot. Also home Norwegian Fjord horses and Chinook sled dogs. Displays on modern pasture management and working small acreage farms with draft animals.

From Route 2 in New Sharon, go north on Route 134 (Starks Road) 4 miles, farm is on the left.



Whitehill Farm, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Diversified certified organic, heirloom vegetables and herbs, 357 McCrillis Corner Road, East Wilton

• Raised beds, crops grown under cover, and gardens planted to vegetables, herbs, and everlasting flowers. Garden tours all day, showing organic and intensive techniques, vegetable trials, mulching, rotation, and cover crops. Sample and purchase produce, organic vinegars, pesto, garlic and herb mixes. Pat the pet donkeys. Sun tea and lemonade available.

From Route 2 (at Franklin Memorial Hospital), south on 133, 1.5 miles to first four corners. Left on McCrillis Corner Road and up hill mile. House is on the right across from white farm house.

Androscoggin County

Nezinscot Farm, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Organic dairy, sheep, goat and vegetable farm and farm store, Route 117, Turner

• Bring the family by to visit the animals, sample our cheeses and meats, tour the gardens, have lunch or tea in our tea house. Felting and spinning demonstrations and garlic harvesting and tasting will take place throughout the day.

From Route 4 take Route 117 north 1 mile on left and right. White barn with red face. Farm sign on the left. Midway between Turner Center and Turner Village.

Norlands Living History Center, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Historic farm of the late 1800s, 290 Norlands Road, Livermore

• Both the barn and farmer’s cottage will have much to teach visitors who will readily understand the difference in farming in the late 19th century when they are shown the old-time equipment used by both farmer and wife. Role-playing staff will talk to visitors about farm life in the period. There will be wagon rides (for a small fee) with the farm horses and you will be offered lemonade and cookies in the farmer’s cottage. Handicapped accessible.

From Lewiston and Auburn take Route 4 north; turn right onto Route 108; look for the Norlands sign; go left on Norlands Road. From Augusta (one half-hour) take Route 202 west to Winthrop; then take Route 133 North to Wayne; turn left on Route 219 and right on Route 108; drive 3 miles to Norlands Road and turn right.

Caldwell Farms, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Organic dairy farm, 313 North Parish Road, Turner

• Owners will serve samples of beef and share the history of the farm from conventional to organic. The farmers’ market trailer will be open. There will be young stock throughout the barns, horses in the pasture and flower gardens to stroll through.

From Route 4 take Route 117 north and follow it through Turner Center. The farm is 1 1/2 miles up on the right from Turner Center. There is a sign at the foot of the hill and the barn is on top of the hill.

Sunnyside Gardens, noon to 5 p.m.

Perennial Nursery, 500 North Parish Road, Turner

• Nursery offers more than 900 varieties of perennials and shrubs, many displayed on the grounds of this c. 1820 farmhouse. Tour of gardens at 1 p.m., discussing plant placement, choice and culture. Meet in front of house. Owner on hand all day to answer questions about plants and their requirements. Cookies and iced tea served.

From Route 4, take Route 117 through Turner Center. Continue on Route 117 for 2.3 miles. Farm on left. Or follow DOT signs from Route 4.

Oxford County

A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Diversified farm, 106 Black Mountain Road, Sumner Working Belgian draft horse, laying hens, cornish-cross broiler chickens, sheep, goat, horse and chickens, including a Cotswold sheep and Romney cross ewes. Tours with discussion of joinery timber farm barn, pastured poultry, rotational grazing and growing toward sustainable living on a small farm using organic methods. Felting demonstrations. Farm store will be open. From Route 26 go east on Route 219 approximately 7 miles. Turn left at Litchfield General Store. Less than 2 miles the road turns left, then bear left after 1/4 mile onto Black Mountain Road. Farm is 1 mile on the left. From Route 4 in Turner turn west onto Route 117 to Buckfield (9 miles). Turn right after Tilton’s Store, cross bridge and right onto Route 140. North on 140 – 5 miles to “T”. Turn left on Route 219. Go 5 miles to Litchfield General Store. Turn right and follow directions above.

Carter’s Farm, 9 a.m-6 p.m.

Vegetable farm, market, Route 26, Oxford Balloons, games for kids. How to extend season with row covers; how to grow vegetables without pesticides. Free refreshments. Hiking or biking on the cross country ski trails. Rentals of canoes and kayaks available to use in the nearby river. Also a surprise presentation. Oxford (Welchville) 200 yards south of Junction 121 and 26. From South Paris, 6 miles south on Route 26.

Hedgehog Hill Farm, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Diversified organic herb and flower farm, Hedgehog Hill Road, East Sumner Gardens include designed herb, annual and perennial beds as well as acres of production plants. Shop filled with products made from harvests and a small library. Greenhouses filled with popular and unusual plants. Two o’clock tour of garden and lecture on herbs or everlastings. From Augusta, take Route 202 to Winthrop; Route 133 to Wayne; Route 219 to E. Sumner; sign for Hedgehog Hill Farm in E. Sumner, opposite the church.

Morrill Farm, 10 a.m. -3 p.m.

Diversified organic farm, 85 Morrill Road, Sumner Many miles of nature trails. Farming as it was done in the past. Poultry, beef, chicken and hogs plus butter making, spinning and weaving. Tours of barn with horse-drawn equipment. Picnic areas for those who bring a lunch. Enjoy the view and nature trails. From Auburn, take Route 4 to North Turner, take a left on Route 117 to Buckfield, take a right on Route 140 to East Sumner, take a left on Route 219 to Roll-in Variety Store, turn right on Greenwood Road, go 1 mile to Morrill Road (left). From South Paris, take Route 26 north and go right on Route 219 in West Paris. Go 8 miles to Roll-in Variety Store and go straight onto Greenwood Road, 1 mile to Morrill Road (Follow Morrill Farm B&B signs).

Mountain Brook Farm, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Alpaca farm, 219 Streaked Mountain Road, South Paris More than 30 exotic alpacas in the shadow of Streaked Mountain. These smaller cousins of llamas boast very fine, luxurious fiber. Gentle, curious and come in an array of colors. Frolicking babies, yearlings and adults. Display area of products and demonstrations.

From Turner take Route 117 west to the center of Buckfield. Continue on Route 117 and go about 5.5 miles. Look for the intersection with Lovejoy Road to the right and Streaked Mountain to the left. Take that left and follow for one mile to the gray farm on the right. From South Paris center, take Route 117 east for about 6 miles to intersection with Lovejoy Road to the left and Streaked Mountain to the right. Take the right and follow for one mile to gray farm on right.

Pooh Corner Farm, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Diversified farm with greenhouses, Bog Road, Mason Twp. Production greenhouses with cut flowers, perennials, and pumpkins as field crops. Ongoing, behind the scenes greenhouse tours. Presentation on floral design at 2 p.m. There will be animals to pet and refreshments will be available. Handicap accessible.

Take Route 2 west from Bethel to DOT sign for farm, take a left onto the Bog Road. Farm is about 2.5 miles down the road. Look for greenhouses.

Stoneheart Farm, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sheep, 285 Streaked Mountain Road, South Paris Columbia sheep raised for breeding stock, wool and meat. There will be demonstrations of spinning, carding and knitting. Also border collie demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wool products, yarn and frozen lamb will be available for sale. From Route 4, take Route 117 south and go approximately 11.3 miles then turn left onto Streaked Mountain Road. The farm is 1.3 miles on the right.

Troika Drafts & The Shoeing Shop, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Working draft horse farm, 955 Buckfield Road, Hebron New England’s only full service draft horse facility. Training and lessons provided for working and show drafts. An on-site farrier shop, as well as carriage, equipment and harness shops. Specializes in Shires. Spring foals to retired drafts, many near 30 years old, available for patting. Informational displays, short workshops and demos. From Auburn take Minot Avenue to Route 229, follow to West Minot. From Mechanic Falls take Route 124 to West Minot. From West Minot Village take Route 124 to East Hebron. The farm is 2.5 miles past Hebron Pines Campground. From Route 4 in Turner take Route 117 toward Buckfield. Take Route 124 off Route 117. Troika Drafts is 2.5 miles past Roundabout Farm Perennials.
