NORWAY – Janis Plummer’s vision for the future of Norway includes more housing for families and more children playing in the neighborhoods.

It also includes everything from new downtown restaurants to a revitalized performing arts center and a rock-climbing wall at the old C.B. Cummings mill site.

Plummer has not been given free rein to redesign the town, but the 23-year-old Oxford native decided to focus on Norway for her master’s project at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. On July 16, Plummer presented her project at the Norway town offices on Danforth Street.

“It was definitely fun, and very challenging,” Plummer said of her work when reached by telephone in Savannah on Wednesday. “I couldn’t have gotten through it without Paul, my adviser.”

Plummer was referring to Paul Sirois of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. Plummer took a computer-assisted design course with Sirois while in high school, she said. When she decided to focus on Norway for her master’s project five years later, she asked Sirois to join a team of professors and architecture professionals who helped her along.

Plummer’s project looked at revitalization possibilities for downtown Norway, with a particular focus on the old C.B. Cummings dowel mill. She envisions mixed uses at the mill as it is redeveloped, including housing, retail spaces and even an educational center and day-care facilities.

Anne Campbell of Norway Downtown Revitalization was on hand for Plummer’s presentation at the town offices, and was also on hand Wednesday as she put the master’s project on display at the Norway Memorial Library on Main Street.

Campbell said Plummer’s ideas may be considered by a steering committee overseeing redevelopment of the mill property. The plans for mixed uses at the site “is what we had been talking about,” she said.

Plummer has no plans to return to Maine soon, but said she may like to come back in the future. She has just taken a job at an architectural firm in Bluffton, S.C.
