AUBURN – A motorist backing up in the southbound breakdown lane of Route 4 spun across two lanes of traffic and into the path of an oncoming pickup truck around noon Wednesday, resulting in a three-vehicle crash, police said.

Several people were taken to the hospital to be checked out, but their names weren’t immediately available. Police said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

According to initial police reports, Sheila McManus, 47, of Skowhegan, had stopped her 1988 Toyota two-door in the breakdown lane and then began backing up. As she did so, police said, she lost control of the car and spun across two lanes of southbound traffic and into a northbound lane.

There, a 2003 Chevy pickup driven Barry Belanger, 58, of Roxbury, collided with the Toyota, sending both the truck and car back into the southbound lanes.

Erin Langlois, 21, of Buckfield, who was heading south at the time, took evasive action and swung her 1996 Chevy into a ditch beside the southbound breakdown lane.

Police said all three vehicles had passengers in them, and that some of the riders were hurt, but not seriously.

Damage to McManus’ Toyota was estimated at $6,500, and to Belanger’s pickup, $5,000. Damage to Langlois’ vehicle was said to be minor.

The crash remains under investigation.
