WEST PARIS – A young bear was struck and killed Thursday afternoon on Route 219.

Oxford County Sheriff Department Deputy Justin Brown said Renee Kubicek, 24, of West Paris was headed toward Trap Corner when the bear emerged from the woods and ran in front of her vehicle.

Kubicek could not stop in time, and hit the bear, killing it, he said.

The accident occurred about two and a half miles from Route 26.

Brown said Kubicek’s family took the bear.

Otherwise, he said, the state’s highway department would have come to pick up the carcass to dispose of it.

Brown said car-bear accidents are quite unusual. There are a good number of bears in that area, however, he added.
