WEST PARIS – Selectmen agreed with residents Thursday that something needs to be done to slow down drivers in the Tuelltown/Stearns Hill area of North Paris.

The request follows a recent fatal accident on a sharp, right-angle turn on Tuelltown Road that took the life of a 7-year-old boy.

The request for action was first brought to the board’s attention two weeks ago. Chairman Wade Rainey agreed, but said it would be best to take the issue to a special town meeting to get input from townspeople. The meeting would be scheduled soon.

“It was a tragic accident, but the road wasn’t at fault,” Rainey said. “The car was traveling too fast to make a sharp curve on the dirt road. I agree something must be done, and maybe the right signs there will help. So we will be looking into that possibility.”

Suggestions accompanying the residents’ request included more speed limit signs in the area and dangerous curve signs on each side of the turn where the fatal accident occurred.

It was also suggested that the road be widened and the corner straightened, but all concerned agreed those changes would probably mean people driving even faster through the area.

“We could straighten the corner, but that would only be done as a last resort,” said Rainey. “It’s best to try adding more signs at this time and see if that helps.”

The rest of the board agreed, and Road Commissioner Bill Keach said he would check prices on signs that would be needed there.

and report back as soon as he gets them.

Once Keach has prices available, the board planned to draft an article for the warrant of a planned special town meeting.
