I read with interest about the crackdown of traffic violators in Lewiston and wished wholeheartedly that Auburn would take the initiative to do the same. I have complained to the police department about the speeds traveled on South Main Street and what do I get? An electronic sign that tells people to slow down, they’re going too fast. They know that. They don’t care.
When was the last time someone was stopped for exceeding the 25 and 35 mph speed limit on South Main? People speed in this area because they know that there is never police presence, so, consequently, there’s no reason to slow down. It doesn’t matter that it’s a neighborhood. It doesn’t matter that there are children playing. It doesn’t matter if there’s a person in a motorized wheelchair. It doesn’t matter if someone is trying to cross the street. All that matters to these drivers is that they get to where they are going in the shortest amount of time. It won’t matter to anyone until there’s a tragedy.
