SUMNER – Sumner Hebert Herman “Beannie” Bean, 79, of Sumner, died Sunday, July 25, at his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the loving care of his family.

He was born July 10, 1925, in West Paris, the son of Herman F. and Florence Mace Bean. He attended West Paris High School.

He entered the military in 1942 and proudly served his country during World War II, in the United States Navy as a gunners mate. He was honorably discharged in May, 1946.

He met Elinor Morrill of Sumner while pumping gas at Trap Corner in 1946. They were married in 1947 in Lewiston. He was later employed at AC Lawrence Leather Company in South Paris for 30 years, until they closed. He was then employed in construction, building schools, and retired in the 1990s.

He was a very social man, who loved his family and his animals. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to livestock auctions, country fairs, and harness racing.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years of Sumner; a daughter, Becky and her husband Dwayne of Sumner; a son, Bruce of Sumner; two granddaughters, Sandra and her husband Thomas Morrison of Greene, and Kristy and her husband Joseph Durgin of Sumner; four great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Nicole and Zackary Morrison, and Cameron Durgin; one sister, Dorothy Heath of Bryant Pond; and one brother, Robert Heath of Peru. He is also survived by his dog and companion, May.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Bean of West Paris; and a sister, Evelyn Mason of West Paris. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
