BALTIMORE (AP) – Pedro Martinez earned his 11th victory in ending a run of frustration against the Baltimore Orioles, and the Boston Red Sox put on another hitting show Monday night in a 12-5 blowout.
Martinez was pulled with one out in the seventh inning during a steady rain. He allowed five runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out five.
Martinez is 7-1 in his last 12 starts. His only loss during that stretch came last Wednesday against the Orioles, when he was touched for eight runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings.
The right-hander came in 0-2 with a 8.66 ERA in three starts against Baltimore this season, but in this game he looked every bit like a three-time Cy Young Award winner – until the rain came.
Martinez (11-4) probably was sharper than he had to be, because the Red Sox provided him with more than enough offensive support.
Jason Varitek singled in two runs to cap a six-run third inning against rookie Erik Bedard, and the Red Sox coasted to their third straight win. Varitek, who had three RBIs, missed Boston’s previous game, a 9-6 win over the New York Yankees, with a sore hand.
Gabe Kapler and Manny Ramirez both had three hits, and David Ortiz drew three walks and had two RBIs for the Red Sox, who have scored 39 runs on 52 hits in their last four games.
Miguel Tejada homered for the Orioles, who are an AL-worst 21-29 at home.
Held to one walk by Bedard (4-5) over the first two innings, the Red Sox sent 10 batters to the plate in the third, scoring five runs with two outs.
After Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly, Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra hit RBI singles, Kevin Millar doubled in a run and Varitek lined a two-run single to left before Bill Mueller made his second out of the inning, on a line drive to third.
The Red Sox batted around in a four-run sixth that made it 10-0. After Mark Bellhorn and Ramirez hit RBI doubles, Millar drew a bases-loaded walk from Eddy Rodriguez and Varitek greeted Todd Williams with a run-scoring groundout.
Tejada hit his 20th homer after a walk to David Newhan in the bottom half. Tejada leads the league with 92 RBIs, two more than Ortiz, who singled in a run in a two-run seventh.
Larry Bigbie chased Martinez with an RBI single in the Orioles’ half, and Terry Adams allowed two inherited runners to score.
In the eighth, Williams was struck in the head by a line drive off Kapler’s bat. The pitcher left under his own power.
Notes: Orioles RF Jerry Hairston left in the seventh with tightness in his left hamstring. … With his 189th start with Boston, Martinez tied Lefty Grove for 12th on the Red Sox career list. … Boston improved to 4-6 against Baltimore, the only team in the AL East against whom the Red Sox have a losing record.
