MONMOUTH – Four residents will complete in next month’s special election for an open seat on the Board of Selectmen.
Leonard Bates, Dennis Fournier, Shirley Pogorelc and Darlene Beaulieu filed nomination papers by the Monday afternoon deadline.
Bates, a retired Winthrop Police Department captain, was elected to the seat earlier this summer. In late June, Fournier’s wife presented evidence that Bates was registered to vote in both Maine and Florida at the time he was sworn into office.
Selectmen and the town attorney determined that this rendered Bates ineligible to remain on the board and decided his seat should be filled at a special town meeting. Bates had already rescinded his Florida residency at the time the allegations were made.
Fournier ran for the seat in the last election. He is an operations manager at C.F. Capital and owns a horse farm.
The two other candidates are newcomers to the political scene. They both were inspired to run for office after attending meetings and listening to residents speak.
Pogorelc is a farmer and small-business owner. If elected, she hopes to find a balance of town growth and services.
Beaulieu, Manchester’s treasurer and tax collector, wants to bring her financial experience to the office.
The special town meeting and election will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, in the Cumston Hall basement.
Absentee ballots should be available sometime after Tuesday, Aug. 3.
Motions for targeted budget reductions, including those that were annulled due to the eligibility issue, will be considered the day after the election at the scheduled selectmen’s meeting.
