MILWAUKEE – Greg Maddux moved within one win of No. 300, and Sammy Sosa homered and doubled in a run in the Chicago Cubs’ 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
Maddux will try to become the 22nd pitcher in major league history to win 300 games when he faces the Phillies at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
He would be the first National Leaguer to accomplish the feat since Philadelphia’s Steve Carlton on Sept. 23, 1983.
Maddux (10-7) gave up one earned run and four hits in a crisp, 79-pitch outing that lasted six innings.
He walked one and struck out six in winning his third straight for the first time in more than a year.
Russell Branyan, in his first start for Milwaukee, sent Maddux’s only mistake 480 feet for a solo homer in the sixth.
Maddux, who is 9-2 in his career against Milwaukee, got into trouble just once, when he loaded the bases in the first inning by allowing singles to Craig Counsell and Geoff Jenkins and a walk to Lyle Overbay.
But he got Brady Clark looking at strike three to end the inning.

Kennedy, Laird scuffle during batting practice
ANAHEIM, Calif. -Anaheim Angels second baseman Adam Kennedy and Texas Rangers catcher Gerald Laird got into a scuffle during batting practice Tuesday, a carry-over from a dispute the night before.
Laird thought Kennedy intentionally tried to get hit by one of Ryan Drese’s pitches in the second inning of Texas’ 6-1 victory Monday night and said something to Kennedy when he came up again in the fifth.
Kennedy was standing behind the batting cage Tuesday and was approached by Laird as the Angels were concluding batting practice and the Rangers were finishing their pregame stretching. Moments later, the two players were in a bearhug that spilled over to the warning track between home plate and the first base dugout.
Soon every player from each team was involved in the skirmish, with players pushing, shoving and grabbing each other before order was restored.
It was unclear whether any punches were thrown.
Neither Kennedy nor Laird would talk to reporters before the game.
