NEW SHARON – Ed Ferreira is feeling better after two surgeries to repair his pelvis and left knee.

SAD 9’s special education director said he is feeling physically stronger, the pain is easing, he is getting the feeling back in his left foot, he is eating better and he is sleeping better.

Ferreira, 48, was hit by a car June 20 on Industry Road while out running. He had been training for a marathon.

Ferreira said he is hoping his doctor gives him the green light Aug. 6 to have his leg-length, soft cast replaced with a shorter cast – or better yet, no cast – so he can start bearing weight on his leg and start using it.

He plans go back to work when school starts.

His pelvis was separated and fractured, and his knee was dislocated and all the ligaments torn in the accident.

His pelvis was reconstructed with plates and screws June 22.

His knee surgery was done June 30 and took 13 hours.

“It was a tough surgery,” Ferreira said. “The recovery was hard.”

He has been recovering at home since July 3.

“It’s been going good. I’ve been feeling better; the pain is getting better,” Ferreira said Wednesday.

He has a soft cast from his hip to his ankle that he is eager to get rid of. That’s been a challenge, he added.

“I really want to start to bend my knee again,” he said.

Ferreira’s wife, Patty Murray, and his family have been at his side through the ordeal.

“I’ve received a tremendous amount of support from friends, co-workers and the community,” Ferreira said.

His physician, Dr. Gerald Tinguely, has even stopped by Ferreira’s house a couple of times to check on him.

Ferreira has stayed in contact with his office secretary and assistant in SAD 9 to make sure things are ready for the beginning of school.

“I’m anxious to get back to living,” he said, “and I’m looking forward to Aug. 6.”

He was getting a wheelchair Wednesday and planned to visit his office to say hello to everyone.
