NEW SHARON – Selectmen have tentatively scheduled a special town meeting to elect a third selectmen on Aug. 23. They are also considering putting an article to build a sand and salt building before voters again.

First Selectman James Smith said he expects the special town meeting to be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at Cape Cod Hill School. He was told that it wouldn’t be a problem to use the school then, but he hasn’t received official word yet.

Town residents submitted a petition to hold the special meeting to elect a replacement for longtime Selectman Bill Lane, who died unexpectedly this spring.

Lane, who had served the town for 19 years, had been re-elected at the March town meeting.

Smith said he and Selectman Maynard Webster will discuss putting the sand and salt building before voters at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Town Office.

Voters rejected spending $272,760 to build a sand and salt storage shed by a 57-34 vote in March.

The sand and salt pile is on private property, and selectmen were hoping to build a shed, as required by law, to move the pile to a state-approved town lot.

But voters thought the building was too costly and too big, and some feared the state wouldn’t reimburse the town for some of the cost.

The town had $155,800 in reserve for the building, and selectmen had hoped to borrow the $116,960 that the state had pledged to pay.
