MONMOUTH – The Theater at Monmouth’s annual children’s production this year is “Pippi Longstocking,” which opens at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, and runs through Thursday, Aug. 19.

A favorite of European literature, “Pippi Longstocking” is by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The popular character is stronger than anyone, self-sufficient and answers to no one, while leading a life full of adventure. Audiences won’t want to miss this children’s tale of the charismatic, freckled Pippi Longstocking with her unmistakable braided red hair and mismatched stockings who has crazy escapades with her friends and neighbors, according to the theater’s spokesman.

The play is directed and adapted by first-time Monmouth director Henry Wishcamper. A veteran director in New York and regionally at Portland Stage Company and the Maine Summer Dramatic Institute, he also founded Shakespeare performances in Portland’s Deering Oaks Park when he was artistic director of the summer institute.

Director Henry Wishcamper said, “Pippi’s appeal is universal because she captures a central aspect of human nature and a key component of everyone’s personality. Pippi, like Charlie Chaplin or Bugs Bunny, is pure id.”

In addition to the opening, performances will be 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Aug. 3, 10 and 17; Thursdays, Aug. 5, 12 and 19; and Sundays, Aug. 8 and 15.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children. People can order tickets by calling the box office, (207) 933-9999.
