LEWISTON – SeniorsPlus will once again offer senior citizens help in filing tax and rent rebate applications.

The purpose of the program is to help Mainers offset the high cost of property taxes assessed on their primary residence as well as the cost of rent. Under the program, senior citizens can receive up to a $400 refund, with the average amount $340. If anyone has a spouse or dependents, the income limit is now $46,900. If single and no dependents, the income limit is $30,300.

The rebate program runs from the first week of August to Jan. 3. People interested in taking advantage of the program should contact SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241 or 795-4010 to make an appointment. Those taking part should bring the following items to the appointment:

A record of all income received for the year 2003, including Social Security, unemployment compensation, railroad retirement, pensions, gross salary and wages, alimony, interest and dividends, support payments, veterans compensation, any other income, life insurance proceeds greater than $5,000. If renter, the total amount of rent paid in 2003.

If a homeowner, the tax assessment as of April 1, 2003. If taxes are $1,800 or more, a copy of the tax bill, with the name on it, must accompany the application.
