JAY – The veterans’ memorial costs may come in under what was originally projected.

Town Manager Ruth Marden said committee member Hyla Friedman gave her an update on the project.

Initially, Friedman had said the costs to improve the downtown veterans’ memorial would exceed $21,000.

That included adding two new monuments and three benches, and cleaning the existing stone.

But new figures are estimated lower at $16,253 and includes a fourth bench.

The intent of the project is to pay tribute to all branches of the service.

The two new monuments are $2,595 each, including foundations.

Cleaning of the existing plaque is estimated to cost $1,263 plus $400 for shipping.

Three stone benches would cost $600 each for a total of $1,800. Wiles Funeral Homes and Memorial Co. has agreed to donate the fourth bench, Marden said.

Masonry work and cleaning of the existing stone is estimated at $600.

A flagpole with a yardarm is being donated by Howie’s Welding and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 3335 in Jay will furnish flags.

Marden said Friedman also estimated that $7,000 is needed for fencing and landscaping.

Jay voters agreed to raise $10,000 for the project at the April town meeting.
