RUMFORD – The search for a new town manager will officially begin today when selectmen meet with David Barrett of the Maine Municipal Association.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Municipal Building.

Barrett will conduct a so-called needs assessment for the town which involves determining pay range, education and experience and characteristics of the person who becomes the new town manager.

Board Chairman Jim Thibodeau said selectmen will also decide whether to place one or two members of the public on the town manager search committee. That committee right now consists of the Board of Selectmen.

The MMA was hired at a cost of $4,500, plus advertising and possibly other fees, to help with the application, screening and interviewing process.

Town Manager Robert Welch, who has served in the position for 12 years, is stepping down as soon as a suitable candidate is found. His resignation is effective no later than Dec. 31.
