AUBURN – Clara June Roberts Marcus, known as “Brownie,” died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 1, at her home.

Born to Paul Roberts and Fannye Rose Marglous Roberts on June 28, 1915, she was the middle of three children.

“Brownie” lived her early years in St. Louis and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in speech pathology. She was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and met her husband of 59 years, Bernard Marcus, while stationed in San Diego, Calif., during World War II.

Following the war, she and Barney moved to the Lewiston/Auburn area where Barney established a dental practice and they raised their four children. Throughout her children’s youth, she balanced her roles as mother and part-time speech pathologist. She was a devoted companion to her husband. Her greater joy and passion in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Over the years she was involved in many civic and religious organizations. At the time of her death she was serving on the board of Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center, where she will be sorely missed. Known to be independent, strong, practical, wise and graceful, she was well loved by many.

She is survived by her husband, Bernard; her brother, Hessel Roberts in St. Louis; her four daughters, Carla, Gerry, Patti and Paula; sons-in-law, Larry Mohr, Paul Koch and Thomas Platz; six grandchildren, Gillian and Erica Schair, Margot Koch, and Joe, Adam and Molly Platz; two great-grandchildren, Maya and Eli Schair-Rigoletti.
