DIXFIELD – A Jay man was killed and a Fairfield man injured Monday in a head-on accident near Route 2 Variety. The accident remains under investigation.

Bobby L. Baker, 45, of 1059 Main St., Jay, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9 a.m. collision, Dixfield Police Chief Richard A. Pickett said.

Baker was driving a Buick Skylark east toward Jay and Eric B. Clark, 36, of Fairfield was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup west toward Bethel, Pickett said.

It looked like both drivers tried to avoid contact, Pickett said, and they collided head-on at the driver’s side front corners of the vehicles.

Baker’s car was on its roof in the middle of the road and Clark’s truck landed about 150 to 200 yards up the road in a driveway, Pickett said.

Debris from both vehicles was scattered all over the road for at least 150 feet, the chief said.

Clark received a leg injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics, but refused to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Wilton Police Chief James Parker and Patrolman Ed Leahy took Clark to a Farmington hospital for a blood test, which is required of all drivers in fatal accidents, Pickett said.

Pickett said a nurse at the scene assisted.

Fire departments from Dixfield, East Dixfield, Jay, Rumford and Wilton responded to assist, along with Mexico and Wilton police.

Dixfield Patrolman Jeffrey Howe is the primary investigator, Pickett said.

Police found a card in Baker’s car that led them to believe that Baker was heading home from the Mexico Registry of Motor Vehicles after taking a motorcycle driver’s test, Pickett said.

Clark had been heading to Bethel for an appointment, police said.

The highway was shut down for more than three hours, and traffic was rerouted.

Ambulances from Med-Care and LifeStar were also on the scene. M.T. Pockets towing service of Dixfield removed both vehicles from the scene.

Maine State Police Sgt. Rick McAlister and Trooper Mike Jillson reconstructed the accident.

Baker’s body was taken to Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington.

He leaves a wife and at least one child, Pickett said.
