PERU – Road Commissioner David Gammon told selectmen Monday that recent heavy rains have damaged several town roads. The extra work has temporarily kept the department from doing some projects that were planned over the past week, including the replacement of damaged culverts and brush cutting.

“It’s stuff that has to be done or we’ll have more road damage,” Gammon said, “but it is taking up a lot of time.”

Also Monday, the board addressed a letter received from the River Valley Growth Council regarding the Diamond Match Mill near the Mexico Bridge. The council has asked the board for its input into future plans for the mill.

Outlook for the property changed recently when the growth council failed to get a government grant meant to help with environmental cleanup of the mill site. Without the grant, the mill is less likely to be an attractive site for new business.

The letter warned that it could take five to eight more years before the council, which currently owns the mill, could apply for a similar grant. After discussing the letter, the board decided to postpone responding so that it could ask a growth council representative for more information about the situation.
