RUMFORD – Heavy winds and torrential rain caused spotty power outages in the Rumford area Tuesday afternoon as a storm passed over from the west.
Some areas received as much as two inches of rain, while other regions were spared altogether. A National Weather Service meteorologist said exact rainfall totals would not be available until early Wednesday.
Central Maine Power Co. crews had power restored to most homes and businesses in the Rumford area by Tuesday night. However, crews continued to work on outages in other parts of the state, including Mount Vernon, Rome and Vienna.
The fast moving storm drenched some areas and brought tree limbs crashing down onto power lines. Wires were reported down on Prospect Avenue in Rumford, Angie Lane in Mexico and on the Roxbury Notch Road.
Just before the storm, about a half-dozen Rumford firefighters responded to a report of an unconscious man on Whitecap Mountain.
Deputy Chief Ben Byam said a utility vehicle and two four-wheelers with about a half-dozen firefighters responded to the call, along with Med-Care Ambulance personnel. When the firefighters arrived at the scene, Byam said the man was driving down the mountain road in a pickup truck.
He said the unidentified man was checked out and released by Med-Care.
Soon after firefighters left the scene, a call came in for an incident at Family Dollar on Congress Street. A bolt of lightning had apparently hit the store, but it caused no damage.
The lightning bolt also damaged the alarm system in the fire station. Although the system still works, Byam said the Fire Department’s alarm system will now need repair.
