FARMINGTON – The Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival returns to Farmington on Sunday, Aug. 8, to perform classical chamber music by Beethoven, Stravinsky and Mendelssohn. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.
The Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival is an organization devoted to presenting and promoting high-quality chamber music performances in western Maine.
Laurie Kennedy is the music director. Performers for this concert are Philip Palermo, Timothy Lees, Laurie Kennedy, Bonnie Thron, Mihae Lee and Carmelo Galante.
Highlights of the performance include Beethoven’s Quartet No. 2, Op. 18, a vintage early Beethoven that shows off his individualistic style, his unexpected turns of phrase, and his expressive motifs.
Sebago-Long Lake will perform Stravinsky’s Suite from Histoire du Soldat (Soldier’s Tale.) It was originally written in 1919, soon after Stravinsky left Russia and settled in France. The concert version features four speaking parts, those of the devil, the soldier, a princess and an unseen reader.
The program will close with Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio #1. It is one of his most popular chamber works, exhibiting a generally lyrical mood, and containing a hint of gypsy music in its final movement.
Admission for the concertwill be $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and students, and $3 for children 12 and under. There are no advance ticket sales. More information may be obtained by calling 645-2157.
