Tuesday, Aug. 10, L/A Arts will bring the Celtic duo Castlebay to Festival Plaza on Main Street in Auburn. These musicians weave together traditions of Maine’s nautical legacy and of the duo’s British Isles heritage.

Then Thursday, Aug. 12, the versatile sounds of Mom’s Home Cookin’ will echo throughout the Courthouse Plaza on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. Performing on a variety of stringed instruments, as well as a unique array of percussive gadgets, Mom’s Home Cookin’ delights in uncovering the treasures of long-forgotten songs.

Both concerts are part of the continuing Music in the Parks summer series.

Having a deep appreciation for the unique character of Maine, as well as the Celtic lands, Castlebay weaves together history, legend and experience into its personable performance style.

Both Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee are fine, expressive vocalists as well as talented instrumentalists. Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and whistles are used ensemble or as vocal support.

Their work is reminiscent of the music of their Celtic ancestors and expresses an intimate experience with the elemental. Castlebay has produced 11 albums that have received international airplay.

Mom’s Home Cookin’ consists of Monica Palmes Grabin on vocals, guitar, banjo, autoharp, thumb piano and various percussive gadgets; Dale Robin Lockman on vocals, guitar, banjo, Appalachian dulcimer, spoons; and Carolyn Mix on vocals, fiddle and mandolin.

Their repertoire includes hundreds of songs from old-time bluegrass to folk songs of the 1960s; from classic country gems to Victorian parlor songs; from a country blues tune from the 1920s to contemporary treasures by little-known songwriters.
