LIVERMORE FALLS – Five people were arrested but two brothers, one considered armed and dangerous, remained on the loose Friday night after police broke up what they described as an international drug ring.
Peter Drown, 38, and Mark Drown, 39, each accused of dealing coke to bar patrons and local workers, were both named in arrest warrants charging multiple counts of trafficking in cocaine.
Last week, agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency raided the Drowns’ home at 137 Goding Road, seizing cocaine and other evidence of drug trafficking, police said.
Investigators said they have since received information that the brothers were continuing to deal drugs from their home. Agents and police went back to Goding Road about 6 p.m. Friday with arrest warrants.
Mark Drown was not home, investigators said. As they searched around the house, police said Peter Drown fled from a nearby trailer and vanished into the woods. Police gave chase, but Peter Drown – described by drug agents as a woodsman – was able to elude them.
Investigators believe Peter Drown is carrying a gun and cocaine. They described him as armed and dangerous. Police said they found more prepackaged cocaine inside the trailer where he had been hiding.
Arrested at the scene Friday night was the suspect’s father, Peter Drown Sr. He was charged with obstructing government administration after allegedly trying to cover up his son’s whereabouts when questioned by police.
Also arrested was 21-year-old Scott Young, who was charged with hindering apprehension. Police said Young blocked one of the MDEA agents from running after Peter Drown when he fled into the woods.
While they remained at the scene, police said another suspect, 22-year-old Michelle Becky, drove up to the Drown house. She was arrested on a warrant charging one count of trafficking cocaine.
Police said other suspects were rounded up in different areas of Livermore and Livermore Falls. Drug agents went to the Riverview Pub in downtown Livermore Falls to apprehend some of the suspects. Officials said the Drown brothers were known to peddle coke to patrons of the bar.
Drug agents arrested John Bassett, 44, on a charge of trafficking in cocaine and Calvin Mitchell, on multiple counts of the same charge. Mitchell’s age was not available. Police said all the suspects are from the Livermore and Livermore Falls area.
Officers from Livermore Falls, Farmington and Jay police departments assisted with the raids on Friday, as did sheriff’s deputies from Androscoggin and Franklin counties. MDEA officials said they have been investigating the Drown brothers for at least seven months.
The investigation was headed by MDEA agent Vernon Stevens. Investigators said they are still examining the connection between local dealers and out-of-state drug traffickers. More arrests are expected.
All suspects arrested remained in custody at the Androscoggin County Jail on Friday night. Bassett and Mitchell were being held on $2,500 cash bail. Becky was being held on $540 bail. Peter Drown Sr. and Young were booked on $240 bail and were expected to be freed Friday night.
