WESTERLY, R.I. – Lucien “Red” Fortier, 85, of Charlestown, R.I., a former Maine resident, died Thursday, Aug. 5, at Westerly Healthcare Facility.
He was born June 22, 1919, in St. Honore Shenley, P.Q., the son of George and Cedulie Roy Fortier.
He was a graduate of Livermore High School. He played football, basketball and was a centerfielder for the 1936 State of Maine Championship baseball team. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox.
A United States Navy veteran during World War II, he served aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, where he witnessed the unconditional surrender of the Imperial Japanese Forces to General Douglas MacArthur, which ended World War II.
Mr. Fortier worked for more than 35 years for Statler Tissue as a paper maker, prior to his retirement.
His memberships included the VFW Post #3335 of Jay, and the American Legion Post #22 of Lewiston.
He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Picard of Charlestown, R.I., and Carla Byrne of Narragansett, R.I.; one brother, Laurent Fortier and his wife, Isabel, of Auburn; two sisters, Madeline Ducheney of Wisconsin, and Armandine Caron and her husband, Armand, of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.
