NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) – Brett Roneberg hit the first grand slam of his career and drove in five runs Friday to lead the Portland Sea Dogs to a 6-4 win over the New Britain Rock Cats in the Eastern League.
The win moved Portland (53-59) into fifth place, one-half game ahead of New Britain (52-59).
Roneberg, who leaves the Sea Dogs after Monday’s game to play for the Australian Olympic team, measured a 1-2 fastball from Henry Bonilla (8-9) with the bases loaded and two out in the fifth inning. He also drove in Portland’s first run with a sacrifice fly.
Kenny Perez had two doubles and a single in the Sea Dogs’ 12-hit attack. Eric Glaser (4-4) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Marc Deschenes notched his third save with a perfect ninth. Bryan Kennedy and Garrett Jones had two RBIs apiece for New Britain. Kennedy and Luis Maza each had two hits.
