If the city’s budget is cut in half and the state, in its wisdom, raises the sales tax by one percent, what in the world do you think is going to happen to our community?

Has anyone tried to purchase food, oil, make house payments and maybe buy a new car at today’s prices with wages earned seven years ago?

Let me talk about the impact the city of Lewiston would encounter if the Palesky tax cap is implemented.

Do you enjoy trash pickup, street sanding and sweeping, road repairs, emergency repairs of water breaks, and supporting the police and firefighters at fires and explosions?

Do you like it when you dial 911 for an emergency and a police cruiser responds within three minutes or so? They protect us and our children from murder, rape, break-ins and the like. When we have a fire in our homes, isn’t it nice to know that Lewiston has a great Fire Department that will come and extinguish a fire before a home is totally lost?

Those are just some of the main reasons why we pay municipal taxes. If our tax rate were cut in half, believe me, our many services would also be cut in half in spite of the fact that Jim Bennett and the city councilors are doing their best to keep our tax rate with no increase.

Oh, by the way, which of those emergency services would you like to see cut?
