In a letter to the editor appearing in the Sun Journal June 16, Ms. Erin Dailey criticized me for having made a derogatory remark about Carthage during a graduation speech at the T.W. Kelly Dirigo Middle School graduation.

The letter writer stated that I made the comment at the end of my speech, which she said was about my war experiences in Iraq. The only reference I made to Iraq was to thank the students for sending several care packages to the soldiers. The intent of my speech was to convey my feelings about patriotism, citizenship and the love of God. I am sorry that a wrong message was received.

The Carthage remark that appeared in my speech was: “If you ever find yourself in a remote and forsaken place, and you are not in Carthage, then work on improving your character.” This remark was only meant in humor; however, I understand that some people may be sensitive to that type of reference. In retrospect, I could have, and probably should have, included all western Maine communities and not singled out Carthage, or left the remark out entirely.

I agree with Ms. Dailey that Carthage has many positive qualities. With its remoteness and small-town environment, I am sure that Carthage is an excellent place to hunt, fish, farm and raise a family.

Again, I am truly sorry if I offended anyone.
