It is amazing to me that one person can hold as much power over Lewiston as Jim Bennett. Since he became administrator, several people have lost their jobs yet he makes over $80,000 a year. The city pays for his cell phone, Internet and car.

Lately he’s been taking properties (using what seems to be his favorite phrase) by eminent domain for the city’s “revitalization” project. So to attract new business he takes away the property from businesses that have been here for many years to build a park that does nothing to hide the ugly Bates Mill.

Then he says that the proposed tax cap would be the wrong thing for Lewiston and is trying to find ways around it if taxpayers pass the bill. What he’s really saying is that the tax cap would shut down his projects. He doesn’t think about the heavy tax burden of the citizens.

He talks about how his credibility has been hurt by the opinions of two city councilors. His credibility has been tarnished in my eyes for a long time. Granted, the issue is personal since he took away my father’s job; however, I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels he is not for the best interest of the city or its taxpayers.
