BETHEL – Selectmen were updated Thursday morning on the progress of the new Angevine Park project and its man-made swimming pond.

In July, members of the Beach Committee and Town Manager Scott Cole thought that both the park and pond would be opened to the public on Aug. 1. But that day came and went.

Now, committee Chairman Don Bennett, also a selectman, estimated that both would be open within a week to 10 days of Thursday.

“But it’s going to take some real movement to get it done,” he said.

He apologized for the delay, but expressed hope that residents might still get in three full weeks of swimming before colder temperatures arrived.

Bennett and Cole also advised selectmen of the possible need to install a pump station at the pond. That would add another $10,000 to $20,000 to the $231,353 project.

Selectman Jack Cross objected, saying a pump station was unnecessary when a smaller, less expensive pump would do.

Bennett said that in the event of a problem, the town must have the capacity to pump out, pump in or recirculate the pond water.

Resident and businessman Bob Chadbourne disagreed, saying the board should wait to see if any problems arise.

If they do, he said the town could take a firetruck to the pond and pump water out or in.

The board also discussed wording on signs to be placed at the park.
