BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Arthur Norman Shapiro, 93, of Cocoa Beach, Fla. and formerly of Haverhill, Mass. and Auburn, died Saturday, Aug. 7, in Boynton Beach, Fla.
Born in Haverhill, Aug. 26, 1910, the son of the late Aaron and Fannie (Roffman) Shapiro, he attended Haverhill public schools and was a graduate of Haverhill High School.
With his brothers, the late George, Louis and Saul Shapiro, he founded the Shapiro Brothers Shoe Company in Haverhill. In 1938, they relocated the business to Auburn.
He was a leader and participant in many civic organizations such as B’Nai Brith, Auburn-Lewiston Community Chest, past district chairman of Boy Scouts and was an active member of the Elks, Masons, Shriners and the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston-Auburn. He was past president of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, the Lewiston-Auburn JCC and past president of the Lake Street School PTA.
He was the husband of the late Sara (Schwartz) Shapiro, who died in 1995.
Survivors include three daughters, Ellen and her husband, Norman N. Newman, of Haverhill, Mass. and Florida, Jane Shapiro, of Canton, Mass. and Harriet A. and her husband, Kenneth Nirenstein, of West Simsbury, Conn.; a son, Lawrence and his wife, Gail P. Shapiro, of Glastonbury, Conn.; a sister, Ada Creighton, of Sun City, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
