The color photo and story of the old Grand Trunk Depot on Lincoln Street caught my eye in the Thursday edition of the Sun Journal (Aug. 5).

As a fairly recent transplant from the urban Midwest, I have noted with pleasure the revitalization of Lewiston since I first came here.

My first impression of Lewiston six years ago was of a tired, old mill town down at the heels and in desperate need of an infusion of new ideas.

But now as I drive through the city, I marvel at the new spirit infecting the community. New construction, new parks, landscaping in both public and private areas.

I see the transformation of old St. Mary’s Church into a vital institution celebrating its Franco-American heritage. I am inspired how Mainers have welcomed the different culture of the Somalis.

In short, Lewiston seems to be on the cusp of a happy new era of civic pride and strength.

Congratulations to the people of Lewiston and its leaders for giving the old town a new lift and a new life!
