AUBURN – Music Together of Lewiston-Auburn, a parent-child music and movement program, will conduct free demonstration classes during August at the Auburn and Lewiston libraries and during the first week of September in Turner and Greene.

In a Music Together class, 12 children and their parents or caregivers meet for 45 minutes each week for 10 weeks to experience new songs, chants, movement activities and instrumental jam sessions. Each semester is based on a collection of 40 songs through which the elements of music, such as melody, harmony and rhythm, are explored.

Each family receives the collection of songs on CD, tape and in book form as part of the registration fee. Both adults and children sit in the circle and participate, led by a teacher with early childhood and music skills. Children have the opportunity to play instruments and improvise and dance to many different styles and tonalities of music.

The goal of Music Together is to develop every child’s opportunity for basic music competence by encouraging experience rather than learning about music. Families are encouraged to attend class together, so younger children and older children in the same family can learn music and movement activities to do at home.

Free demonstration classes will be held at the new temporary location of the Auburn Public Library at the Auburn Mall at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, and Wednesday, Aug. 25; at the Lewiston Public Library children’s room at 10 a.m. Thursdays, Aug. 12 and 19, at 10 a.m. Tickets which are free are required due to space limitations and can be picked up in the children’s room.

In Turner at the Turner Village Church, 143 Main St., a demonstration class will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2. In Greene, a demonstration class will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the VFW Hall on Main Street next to Greene Central School.

Music Together will begin the fall semester the week of Sept. 13, with classes at the Auburn United Methodist Church, Park Avenue, on Thursday and Friday mornings, class in Greene at the VFW Hall on Tuesday mornings and class in Turner at the Turner Village Church on Thursday mornings.
