NORWAY – Papermaking with Richard Lee will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Matolcsy Art Gallery. To register call Pat at 743-8033 or the Western Maine Art Group at 743-5411.

As an artist, educator and traveler, Lee has taught many papermaking workshops for students and adults over the past 20 years. He leads participants to understand the basic process of making paper from plant fibers.

Lee demonstrates techniques for preparing fibers, making simple sheets and embellishing through embedding found objects, creating lace or adding color. He then has each person make creative papers.

Lee has led workshops with adults at his Brunswick studio, with art teachers at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, with high schoolers in Cuba and with students at Vinalhaven, Gould Academy and Cape Elizabeth.

He has been a member of the Maine Arts Commission’s Touring Artists Program, through which he did workshops and residencies. His work has been exhibited at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Hay Gallery, Reed Art Gallery in Presque Isle, and the Matolscsy Art Gallery. His handmade books and sculptural pieces will appear in a group exhibition of contemporary fiber at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland this fall.
