PORTLAND (AP) – Tom Johnson of Rhode Island shot an 8 under par 64 to take a two-shot first-round lead in the 86th Maine Open golf tournament at Riverside Municipal Golf Course.

Jerry DiPhilippo and John Hickson of Maine, along with David Bowyer of Connecticut, each shot an opening round 66.

Defending champion Kirk Hanefeld of Massachusetts shot a 73. Biddeford native Casey Bourque, who now lives in New Hampshire, shot a 67.

The 54-hole tournament, which offers a top pro prize of $6,500, continues through Friday.
