SALEM TOWNSHIP – If Maine Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron approves, Mt. Abram High School students could have two unexpected days off.
The SAD 58 Board of Directors voted Tuesday night to support Superintendent Quenten Clark’s request to give faculty and staff an opportunity to train on the new Apple computers coming to the school this year. The computers are not expected to arrive until Aug. 15 and will then have to be configured. That means faculty members will not have an opportunity to learn how to integrate the electronic notebooks into their curriculum.
One of the proposed training days is already designated as an early release day, Sept. 22, children’s day at the Franklin County Fair. The following day would also be off for students.
Though the board is not authorized to approve the days off, Clark wanted to gain their support for the proposal before the commissioner.
The board also approved a proposal from a Baptist church to use the former superintendent’s offices for their services. The church offered to pay the building’s utility bills in return. The district will continue to pay insurance on the building since it owns it. Eventually the building will be turned over to the town of Kingfield at which time the church will need to negotiate its use with selectmen.
Clark announced that Liz Cote-Albro, the high school’s former librarian, lost her long fight with cancer Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Mt. Abram High School auditorium in Salem Township.
