FARMINGTON – It’s time again for lovers of opera and beautiful singing to rally in memory of Farmington’s own diva, Lillian Nordica.
The operatic superstar performed her last concert in her hometown on Aug. 17, 1911, in what is now Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.
The Nordica Memorial Association sponsors a concert, on the same date, to commemorate that occasion and to highlight young, up-and-coming singers from Maine. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, in Nordica Auditorium.
This year’s artist is Jenny Lynd Robinson, winner of the annual Nordica scholarship, awarded to a student of singing at the Maine National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions held at Bates College every April.
Robinson is one of only two singers who have won the award twice. A native of Belfast and a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, she has performed extensively in southern Maine. She was chosen this summer for the prestigious Maine’s Emerging Artist program and is currently performing “La Ciesca” in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi.” She plans to study for a master’s degree in voice at the University of Memphis.
Robinson’s program will include arias by Gluck and Puccini, and art songs by Debussy, Copland and others. She will be accompanied on the piano by Judith Quimby, well-known to the Farmington community for her participation in many previous Nordica Day concerts.
This concert is a gift from the Nordica Memorial Association to the community, so there will be no charge for admission, and there will be refreshments after the concert. More information may be obtained by calling 778-2042.
