POLAND – The Abused Women’s Advocacy Project is getting ready for its 6th annual “Amaizing” Corn Maze.
For the first time, AWAP is leaving the maze open from 8 to 10 p.m. on one night for an event called “Rock the Maze. “
On Sunday, Aug. 29, Portland-based radio station WCYY will conduct a live broadcast from the site on Empire Road as people make their way through the chopped-up cornfield with flashlights.
AWAP organized its first “Amaizing” Corn Maze six years ago, and the event has been growing ever since.
For $4 on most days and $5 on the night event, people are invited to find their way through a maze cut through 4 acres of corn stalks.
The event, scheduled for this weekend and next, is AWAP’s largest moneymaker. Organizers hope to raise $20,000 this year.
A spokeswoman for AWAP said the money is needed more than ever this year because the organization’s other fund-raiser, the Winter Walk Against Violence, was hampered by last February’s bad weather.
All proceeds from the event are used to help AWAP support victims of domestic violence. The organization has been helping women and children in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties for the past 27 years.
Services include a 24-hour help line, court advocacy and an emergency shelter.
