POLAND SPRING – The first annual Poland Spring Art Show and Sale was a huge success, attracting 70 area artists to the hilltop location of the Poland Spring Resort.

Sponsored by the Poland Spring Preservation Society, the event provided a venue for artists to display their work. Strolling musicians, food and golf cart transportation to different areas of the resort added to the atmosphere.

The judged competition resulted in the following awards:

Photography: first, Craig Wratten of Winslow; second, Steve Traficonte of Oxford; third, Mark Plummer of Newcastle.

Oil: Doris Bernier of Wells, Susan Sweetser of Bryant Pond and Mike Raymond of Buckfield.

Watercolor: David Tibbetts of New London, N.H., Robert Drewal of Lewiston and Lillian King of Gorham.

Acrylic: Scott Hunter of Turner, Jeanne Merrill of Windham and Sue McDonald of Denmark.

Pastels/Other: Peg Johnson of Rye, N.H., Elizabeth Evans of West Paris and Cynthia Morse of Raymond.

Sculpture: Gideon Doman.

The second annual show is scheduled for Saturday, July 23, 2005, at the Poland Spring Resort.

A rotating display of works by area artists is on display at the Nettie Ricker Art Gallery in the Maine State Building, operated by the Poland Spring Preservation Society.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and was originally constructed on the grounds of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, subsequently disassembled and shipped back to Poland Spring.

The facility is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday during the current season. For additional information on hours, call 998.4142.
