As the November elections draw near, voters are faced with a very important tax cap question that will surely affect every property taxpayer. Do we vote yes or no?

Already the municipalities and state are out with the typical scare tactics, cutting the lifelines each community needs to function. Do it “our way” or else. Shame on them for even thinking that way. We can have the cap if state and local governments would eliminate excess waste and trim salaries to fit today’s economy. We, taxpayers, have had to cut back. I’ve seen people lose income and readjust in spite of it. State and local governments can do the same if forced to. They did it in California (Proposition 13) and they can do it here.

The present property tax structure as it stands, in my opinion, is unfair because of the way it is set up, TIF and mill rate structuring. Why should George H. W. Bush on Walkers Point pay a mill rate of 8.9 and my mill rate here in Lisbon is closer to 26 mills?

Government is out of control like lost sheep. We are the sheepdogs and we must bring them home. Over 100,000 people have signed this petition for reform and now the people are finally in the driver’s seat and can force state and local government to do what they “won’t” do on their own. We need tax relief now.

The problems in state government can’t be solved by the minds that created them.
