BALTIMORE – Mark Redman pitched eight innings of six-hit ball, and the Oakland Athletics used a three-run fifth inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Monday night.
Eric Byrnes and Erubiel Durazo both had two hits and an RBI for the A’s, who maintained their lead in the AL West with only their second win in six games.
Redman (9-9) allowed one run, struck out two and walked one to improve to 3-1 in his last five starts. The left-hander was 1-4 lifetime against Baltimore, with his lone win coming in a relief appearance in April 2000.
Octavio Dotel worked the ninth for his 11th save in 15 opportunities.
Javy Lopez homered for the Orioles, who lost for only the third time in 14 games. Baltimore (57-60) was trying to move within a win of .500 for the first time since June 2.
Baltimore starter Erik Bedard (5-7) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking three. He gave up a total of two runs and eight hits in his previous two starts, but the left-hander was undone by one troublesome inning Monday.
Cardinals 10, Reds 5
ST. LOUIS – Albert Pujols homered for the fifth time in four games and tied his career high with five RBIs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.
Pujols, 9-for-18 with 11 RBIs in the last four games for the Cardinals, also scored his NL-leading 100th and 101st runs. He has scored 100 or more runs in each of his first four major league seasons.
Pujols hit a two-run double in the first, doubled and scored in the seventh, and hit a three-run homer off John Riedling in the eighth. It’s the second five-RBI game of the year and fifth of his career for Pujols, who also did it July 20 at Chicago.
Scott Rolen drove in two runs for the Cardinals, giving him a major league-leading 104 RBIs.
Rangers 5, Indians 2
ARLINGTON, Texas – Brian Jordan hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning and the Texas Rangers extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.
With two outs and none on, Jordan hit the first pitch from C.C. Sabathia (9-7) over the center-field fence for his third home run and a 3-2 lead.
Limited to 29 games this season because of knee problems, Jordan started the night with a .167 average.
Texas won for the sixth time in seven games against Cleveland in this matchup of playoff contenders. Victor Martinez hit his 20th homer for the Indians.
