PORTLAND – Leland A. Toothaker, 63, of Madrid passed away on Sunday, Aug. 15, at Maine Medical Center.

He was born March 15, 1941, son of John R. and Elvie (Dunham) Toothaker. He was a graduate of Phillips High School, Class of 1960.

He served in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He married the former Melanie Barker on April 20, 1963 in Phillips.

After getting out of the service he started working in the woods as a lumberman for a few years, then went to work for G.H. Bass Shoe Co. in Wilton as a hand sewer for six years. He then went to work for Lauri, Inc. in Avon Valley as a cutter and press operator for many years. After that he went to work for SAD 58 as a bus driver and custodian for many years.

He enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, hunting and going to the races; but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Melanie, of Madrid; one daughter, Wendy Lovejoy and husband Patrick, two grandchildren, Nathan and Sierra Lovejoy, all of Madrid; five brothers, Earl Toothaker and wife, Connie, of Salem, John R. Toothaker Jr. and wife, Margie, Bruce Toothaker, Jeffrey Toothaker, all of Phillips, Kendall Toothaker and wife, Linda, of New Vineyard; three sisters, June Searles, Cheryl Bachelder and husband David, Wandalyn Thompson and husband, Oscar II, all of Phillips; sister-in-law, Glenda Toothaker; special friend, Roger Abbott Sr., of Starks; many special nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Ronald Toothaker.
