NEW SHARON – Voters have a chance to elect a new selectman, decide on preliminary work for a new sand and salt building, and consider a road name change Monday, Aug. 23.

The special town meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Cape Cod Hill School gymnasium.

Nominations will be taken from the floor for the new selectman.

The new board member will fill the third selectman’s term, left vacant when Selectman Bill Lane died unexpectedly last spring after 19 years of service to the town.

Townspeople presented the selectmen, Jim Smith and Maynard Webster, with a petition this summer asking that a special town meeting be held to elect a third selectman.

Webster said voters will also be asked if they want to change the name of the Pump House Road to Library Road. Both the town’s water supply and the library are on the road, Webster said.

Voters will also consider letting town officials get some preliminary work done to build a sand and salt shed, Webster said.

The preliminary work would possibly consist of some engineering and clearing of the town-owned lot for the building, Webster said.

Voters rejected spending $272,760 to build a sand and salt storage shed by a 57-34 vote in March.

The sand and salt pile is on private property, and selectmen are hoping to build a building, as required by law, to move the pile to a state-approved town lot.

The town had $155,800 in reserve for the building in March, and selectmen had hoped to borrow the $116,960 that the state had pledged to pay.
