So let me get this straight: Maine could issue bonds worth $40 million and get back another $80 million from the federal government and other sources, and then we just have to pay back $40 million? That sounds like a good deal to me. I’m not sure why Republican House leaders are complaining about Rep. Sonya Sampson’s support for those bonds.

I would think that, especially in these trying financial times, we should take advantage of low interest rates and matching dollars to invest in our state’s economy. I think supporting 1,000 or more high-paying construction jobs would be welcomed, too.

Republican leaders say they support preserving conservation land, improving our water and sewer systems, and rebuilding old bridges and roads. Rep. Sonya Sampson of Auburn also cares about those things. Here’s the difference: She actually voted for them.
